"When are you speaking to the Haim sisters?" a message pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can join as their extra sister."

There's just a single issue: The sender also wants to be the Haims' additional sibling. Furthermore, we are not alone. A host of high-profile supporters have openly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear an irresistible appeal is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana began their career performing shows at small eateries with their parents. Presently, they stand as multiple Grammy contenders.

Like all the best bands, they're a inseparable trio. Their visuals frequently depict them marching in harmony down the roads of Los Angeles. In concert, they play with such pure happiness you inevitably think, "I wish to be part of that, too."

"The numerous instances on tour that audience members came up to us and said, 'Watching you live, I picked up a guitar'," remarks Alana, the youngest of the trio. "It is the biggest compliment. That is recognition in itself. We have succeeded if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"And thus all is invited to be the honorary Haim sister."

Grammy Recognition

The band have called into home, where they're resting up after an extensive tour in promoting their fourth album, I Quit.

They're presently reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I watch the lists every year, so it sort of feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is announced," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I hallucinating'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We deliberately set out to make a rock record this time, so it's a major step," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Candor

The album came out of a phase of emotional upheaval. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that odd in-between place where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to start anew.

The words track breakups and farewells. The sisters desire love, but not the kind of love they've had. You can hear them determining in the moment who they want to be.

"That's a perfect summary, yes," agrees Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to make an effort in blocking the noise and saying, 'I don't give what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That recent toughness required a new sound – more raw and direct than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drums.

"Drums are such a detailed thing, and I care so much about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the subject of our book," quips Alana. "I always say, our albums cannot begin until we find the ideal drum sound."

Anecdotes and Shared Humor

The band's honesty fueled the album's rollout, where the sisters shared some of their dating tales.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these heartbreaks, you just feel like there's only darkness," notes Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and hear others tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

A Secure Legacy

You can clearly sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their place in the music world.

They're top-billed acts, with hit albums and an global fan base.

But Haim will consistently be their number one focus.

"We have been playing music since I was little," shares Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were meant to do. And I'm really thankful we've gotten here and we're still kicking."
