The former US president’s most recent warning to introduce an further complete levy on items imported from China has been described as a “classic case” of American hypocrisy, per the Beijing administration.

A official from China’s Commerce Ministry additionally remarked that Beijing could implement its own unrevealed “countermeasures” if the US President carries out his warning, adding that the country was “unafraid” of a looming trade war.

Last Friday, Donald Trump responded at the Chinese government’s action to reinforce its policies for overseas sales of rare earths, accusing China of “adopting a confrontational stance” and attempting to hold the world “under its control”.

Furthermore, he vowed to pull out of a arranged summit with Chinese leader President Xi, which was set for a meeting in South Korea later this month.

Trump’s comments on that day shook stock exchanges, with the S&P 500 share index closing down over two and a half percent, marking its steepest fall since April.

The president’s words reignited apprehensions of a commercial dispute between the United States and China.

Earlier this year, the both nations had agreed to remove significant levies on each other’s products, which had created the possibility of trade halting between the two countries.

Consequently, American import duties on Chinese imports incurring an additional 30% levy compared with the beginning of 2025, while US goods entering the Chinese market are subject to a 10% tariff.

Officials denounced United States controls on chips and semi-conductors while justifying China’s own overseas sale regulations on rare earth minerals as “standard procedures” to ensure national security and that of the global community.

The spokesperson said that for “a long time”, the America had “expanded the interpretation” of domestic safety, misused foreign shipment regulations and “enforced” discriminatory practices against Beijing.

“Turning to” import duty warnings is not the proper method to interact with the Chinese government,” their representative stated.

“China’s position on a trade conflict has consistently been unchanging: we do not want one, but we are fearless of one.”

Recently, China declared it was strengthening foreign shipment restrictions on key elements and other materials vital for high-technology production.

This was seen as a key move, as the country processes about ninety percent of the world’s rare earths, which are used in products such as solar panels and smartphones.

Latest statements from Washington and Beijing are being viewed by analysts as a method of enhancing bargaining power prior to forthcoming discussions.

Remains uncertain whether a meeting between Donald Trump and President Xi, scheduled at a high-level meeting in Seoul later this month, will still proceed.
