A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel censure from critics regarding the rapidity and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash happened on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We will meticulously determine the cause of this tragedy,” stated the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose time in office ended the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the broader strategy to revitalize the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The development of both railway systems was managed by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in national projects. They were built at an fast-tracked pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked persistent apprehensions over construction quality.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would be "responsible" in both the development and running of these vital undertakings.
